Follow our cover letter tips to land your dream job.

Good writing skills are hard to come by today. Your employee can tell a lot about your educational background and areas of expertise from the writing style used in your cover letter. You want to make a good first impression and draw your reader’s attention in order to entice them to look at your resume. The letter needs to effectively demonstrate why you are a worthy candidate for the position, and must be pristinely written with no spelling or grammatical errors. Don’t worry, we’ll walk you through it in this week’s blog.

Follow Proper Formatting

Before you start writing, make sure you format your cover letter correctly. Your contact information, including your full name, email, and phone number, should be at the bottom of the page where you sign your name. Most cover letters are submitted electronically today, so you don’t need to worry about a handwritten signature at the bottom. You’ll also want to make sure you’re addressing the letter to an actual person. Do not start your letter off on the wrong foot by addressing it ‘To whom it may concern.’ Do your research! Find out who will be reviewing all job applications. This person usually has a position within the company’s Human Resources department. Find out their name, and address your cover letter to them personally. The letter itself should be one page, single-spaced, with paragraph indentations to improve readability.

Your Cover Letter’s Content

The first paragraph of your flawless cover letter is a way to introduce yourself. State the position you are applying to and from what source you discovered it. Show your interest and enthusiasm for the job and include general statements explaining how your overall qualifications align with the job requirements. For example, you might write,  “While attending the January 16, 2015 XYZ Job Fair, I learned of the Developmental Marketing Associate position with [insert company name]. With a proven, strong marketing background, I am confident that my experience qualifies me for this position.’ The following paragraph should highlight these experiences in detail. Thoroughly explain how they match what the employer is seeking. You need to give concrete examples and show how they meet the company’s needs. Once you’ve done this, your final paragraph should mention the attached resume, detailing your skills and qualifications. You should reveal what you want to happen next, for example, ‘I would revel in the opportunity to discuss my skills with your and your team,’ followed by a thank you for their time a consideration. Hooray! You’ve created a flawless cover letter guaranteed to land your dream job.
